Medicare Advantage

An overview of Medicare Advantage (Part C)โ€”what it covers, the plan types available, who qualifies, and how to apply for a plan that fits you.

Medicare Advantage, also called Medicare Part C or MA plans, is a type of program that sits within Medicare. You can think of it as an alternative to "Original Medicare," which is made up of plans A, B, and C. Anyone reviewing their choices should give Medicare Advantage a look.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage is a health insurance option that bundles together a mix of coverage, including some of what Original Medicare provides. It may also cover things Original Medicare does not, such as prescription drugs, vision, hearing, dental, and wellness programs. A number of private companies have been approved by Medicare to offer Medicare Advantage plans, and those companies must follow specific rules set by Medicare. Even so, the available plans can differ slightly in their coverage options and costs, and they may fall under one of the following:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plan
  • Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP), or
  • Chronic Special Needs Plan (C-SNP).

The plan should spell out which doctors are part of its network and what it costs to use a doctor who is outside that network. On top of that, different plans can carry different out-of-pocket costs and requirements, such as needing a referral to see a specialist. Once again, every plan is uniqueโ€”so knowing what options exist is essential.

How Someone May Qualify

Eligibility for Medicare Advantage varies by plan; still, there are general factors that should make a person eligible for a Medicare Advantage plan. These include living within the plan's service area and already having Medicare Parts A and B. People who have Original Medicare may have qualified for it because of their age, a disability, or having End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

How to Apply for a Medicare Advantage Plan

The way you apply for a Medicare Advantage plan can differ depending on which plan you're pursuing. Individuals should take the right steps to figure out which plan suits them best and how to apply for it. The application process might mean visiting the plan's website, completing a paper form, or calling the plan directly.
