Medigap Plan A

Medigap Plan A is the most basic Medicare Supplement, covering core gaps in Original Medicare—see what it includes, what you'll still owe, and whether it fits you.

Medigap Plan A provides basic benefits, yet it can still help seniors close some of the gaps that Original Medicare leaves behind. If you're just beginning your search for Medicare Supplemental insurance, you're in the right place. Quottes can help you compare rates from the top-rated Medicare Supplement carriers so you land the best coverage for the lowest cost.

Don't mix up Plan A with Part A, which is your inpatient hospital coverage under Original Medicare.

What Does Medigap Plan A Cover?

Among the 10 standardized plans, Plan A is regarded as the most basic Medicare Supplement. It picks up these items and services that Original Medicare doesn't cover:

  • Medicare Part A copayments for inpatient hospital care — up to an extra 365 days after your Medicare benefits run out
  • Medicare Part B copayment
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care copayment

What Costs Are You Responsible for?

Plan A members must cover their own Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, along with the Part B excess charges, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, and any foreign travel emergency care. If those expenses feel steep, you might look at a more complete plan like F, G, or N that covers more—or all—of these services.

Is Plan A Right for You?

That comes down to your health and financial circumstances. Every Medigap plan carries a monthly premium that can add up, particularly if you rarely use the benefits.

Even though it can be layered onto your Original Medicare coverage, Plan A will still leave you facing higher out-of-pocket costs than other Medigap plans.

Plan A Eligibility and Enrollment

As long as you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you're eligible for any Medigap plan sold in your state.

We recommend applying during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, a six-month window that opens when you turn 65 and have enrolled in Medicare Part B. Sign up after that window closes, and insurers may raise your monthly premiums due to medical underwriting.

How the Companies Charge You

Every Medigap plan comes with a monthly premium, and the exact figure can differ from policy to policy. Insurers can price their premiums in one of three ways:

  • Community rated — Everyone who buys pays the same monthly amount regardless of age.
  • Issue-age rated — Premiums are set by your age when you first buy the policy. Buy younger and your premium is lower, and it won't climb as you age.
  • Attained-age rated — Premiums are tied to your CURRENT age, so your premium rises as you get older.

If you're weighing a Medigap plan, it's smart to compare several policies available in your area. Doing so shows you how premiums are set and how much to budget each month, giving you a clear sense of what the policy will cost.
