Medigap Plan C

Medigap Plan C covers nearly every Medicare gap except Part B excess charges, and is available only to those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Medigap Plan C is a policy that fills almost every Medicare gap you'd otherwise have to pay yourself. The single item it doesn't cover is the Part B excess charges.

Important Note: Plan C is now available only to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Also, don't confuse Plan C with Part C, which is Medicare Advantage.

What Are the Benefits of Plan C?

Plan C delivers excellent benefits for those who became eligible for Medicare before 2020:

  • Medicare Part A copayments for inpatient hospital care β€” up to an extra 365 days after your Medicare benefits run out
  • Medicare Part B copayment
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care copayment
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Foreign Travel Emergency β€” up to plan limits

Plan C Eligibility and Enrollment

Beyond the note above, buying a Medigap policy involves certain eligibility rules:

  • You must have Original Medicare A and B, and you can't hold both Medigap and Medicare Advantage.
  • A Medigap policy covers just one person, so your spouse would need to buy a separate policy.
  • Insurers aren't legally obligated to sell Medigap plans to people under 65. If you're under 65 and on Original Medicare, the policy you want may not be available to you.

If Medigap interests you, your first chance to enroll is during Medigap Initial Enrollmentβ€”a six-month period that begins when you turn 65 and sign up for Medicare Part B. Miss this window, and you may not be able to get the plan you want, or it could cost more.

How the Companies Charge You

Every Medigap policy carries a monthly premium, and the exact amount can vary from plan to plan. Insurers can price their premiums in one of three ways:

  • Community rated β€” Everyone who buys the plan pays the same monthly amount regardless of age.
  • Issue-age rated β€” Premiums are based on your age when you first buy the plan. Buy younger and your premium is lower, and it won't rise as you age.
  • Attained-age rated β€” Premiums are based on your CURRENT age, so your premium increases as you get older.

If you're considering a Medigap plan, compare several policies offered near you. That helps you understand how premiums are set and gives you a sense of what you'll pay for the policy.
