Most Popular Plans

Plans F, G, and N are the most popular Medicare Supplements, each covering different gaps in Original Medicare so you can match one to your needs.

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap policies, help people on Medicare pay for the hospital and medical costs their Part A and Part B don't fully cover. Those costs can include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. The most sought-after supplement plans are usually Plans F, G, and N β€” though the best fit for you hinges on your own circumstances.

Quottes can help you compare Medicare Supplements and offer recommendations based on your needs and budget.

What Plans F, G, and N Have in Common

When it comes to coverage, each of these plans pays the Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for up to 365 extra days once Medicare benefits are exhausted, the Part B coinsurance or copayment, the first 3 pints of blood, the Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment, skilled nursing facility care coinsurance, the Part A deductible, and foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits).

On the cost side, one shared trait is that the insurance company charges a monthly premium for the policy. The pricing structures used (community-rated, issue-age rated, and attained-age rated) can differ.

How Plans F, G, and N Differ

Despite their overlap, these plans also part ways in several respects. For instance, Plan F isn't available to anyone who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. But provided you have Original Medicare and apply during Medigap Open Enrollment, you should be able to obtain Plan G or Plan N. Another distinction is that Plans F and G also offer high-deductible versions, which can come in handy if you have sizable retirement savings.

On coverage, Plan F additionally pays Medicare Part B deductibles, and both Plans F and G cover the Part B excess charges. Plan N differs slightly as well, such as in how it handles the Part B coinsurance or copayment. With Plan N, members must pay a copayment of up to $20 for certain office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't lead to inpatient admission β€” before Plan N covers the Part B coinsurance.

Then there are the out-of-pocket costs. Even when the plans share pricing structures, the three can still differ in price. As a rule, the more coverage a plan offers, the higher its premiums tend to be.
