Medigap Plan F

Plan F is the most complete Medicare Supplement with no out-of-pocket costs, but it's only open to those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Medigap Plan F stands as the most complete Medicare Supplement, leaving you with no out-of-pocket costs. That said, just like Medigap Plan C, Plan F is available only to individuals who qualified for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Quottes will explain more about what Plan F offers.

What Plan F Covers

By its very design, Plan F is the Medigap policy that includes the widest range of benefits:

  • Medicare Part A hospital copayments for inpatient stays β€” plus an extra 365 days once your Medicare benefits run out
  • Medicare Part B copayment
  • Your first 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care copayment
  • The Medicare Part A deductible
  • The Medicare Part B deductible
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Medicare Part B excess charges
  • Foreign Travel Emergency care β€” up to the plan's limits

For anyone who qualifies, Medigap Plan F steps in after Medicare to handle the deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance you would otherwise pay yourself. At the doctor's office, you won't face a copay again.

Who Qualifies and When to Sign Up

As noted, Plan F can no longer be purchased by new beneficiaries. And a few eligibility rules apply to buying any Medigap plan:

  • You need Original Medicare Parts A and B, and you cannot hold both Medigap and Medicare Advantage at the same time.
  • A Medigap policy covers only one person. Your spouse would need to buy their own separate plan.
  • Insurers are not legally obligated to sell Medigap coverage to people under 65. If you're under 65 with Original Medicare, the plan you want may not be available to you.

If a Medicare Supplement plan appeals to you, your first chance to enroll comes during Medigap Initial Enrollment β€” a six-month window that opens when you turn 65 and sign up for Medicare Part B. Skip this period and you may be unable to secure your preferred plan, or it could cost more.

How Insurers Set Your Rate

Every Medigap policy carries a monthly premium, and the precise amount can vary depending on location, gender, and tobacco use. Insurers rely on three methods to price their premiums:

  • Community rated β€” Every purchaser of the plan pays an identical monthly amount regardless of age.
  • Issue-age rated β€” Your premium is based on your age when you first bought the plan. Buying younger means a lower premium, and it won't rise just because you age.
  • Attained-age rated β€” Your premium reflects your CURRENT age, so it climbs as you grow older.

At most companies, Plan F will run slightly higher for men than for women. And those who use tobacco will frequently pay more than non-users.

A Few More Things to Know

Plan F policyholders don't need to fear having their coverage dropped over health issues or the number of claims they submit. The coverage is guaranteed renewable.

If you don't qualify for Plan F, take a look at Plan G or Plan N, both of which deliver strong value for the premiums you pay.
