Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplements, or Medigap, fill the gaps left by Original Medicare—learn what they cover, who qualifies, and the best time to enroll.

Medicare Supplements, also called Medigap, give people a way to close the gaps left by Original Medicare. Depending on someone's Medicare situation, there may well be a Medigap plan suited to them. Many factors come into play, so anyone interested should do their homework and be sure they pick the option that best fits their medical needs. Whenever you need direction, reach out to an agent for help.

What Are Medicare Supplements?

Medicare Supplement policies, also known as Medigap, help people with Original Medicare pay for hospital and medical expenses that Medicare Parts A and B leave uncovered. That can include help with copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

A range of Medigap plans exists, each possibly carrying slightly different eligibility rules and coverage, though they generally don't pay for long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

Private companies run Medigap policies, having been approved to do so by their individual states. These policies charge premiums separate from what Original Medicare bills, and they don't cover prescription drugs the way Medicare Part D does.

Medigap Eligibility

While each Medigap policy can carry slightly different eligibility rules or exclusions, they share some common ground. A key requirement is that anyone hoping to enroll must have both Medicare Part A and Part B. Medigap policies also can't be combined with other coverage, such as Medicare Advantage.

Another important point is that a Medigap policy covers just one person, meaning a spouse would need to buy their own separate policy. The upside is that once you have a Medigap policy, you should remain eligible for it—provided you keep paying the premium.

How and When to Apply

Once you've figured out which Medigap policy suits you best, the next step is buying the one you want. We'll walk you through how and when to do that.

The ideal time to purchase a Medigap policy is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period—which begins the month you turn 65 and have Medicare Part B—and this window doesn't come around again. During it, you'll usually find better rates and a wider selection of plans. You can also buy any policy sold in your state, even if you have existing health conditions!

Although you can buy a Medigap policy straight from the insurance company, you'd miss out on the one-on-one guidance a broker like us provides. If any snags come up along the way, we can help iron them out and make sure you understand exactly what your policy covers.
